Alzheimer’s Research Foundation is proud to provide the McKnight Brain Institute at The University of Florida, Gainesville campus a donation of $50,000.00 made accessible to Dr Kennerth Heilman, program head and director.  The funds are available to support the research the Fellows are doing to further understand Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias so as to work towards a cure.  It is through the generous donations of the Alzheimer’s Research Foundation supporters that enables us to contribute to the McKnight Brain Institute’s work in the delineation of memory problems associated with normal aging and those associated with diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Chemicals found in prickly pear plant could delay symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease

2016 was a great year for Alzheimer’s research. While no true cure was found, many ways to stave off this dreaded disease were recognized, including the Mediterranean diet, wine, and certain exercises. Now not even one month into 2017 Dr. Neville Vassallo at the University of Malta School of Medicine and Surgery believes Brown Seaweed and the Prickly Pear Cactus may hold the key to stopping plaque buildup in the brain that causes Alzheimer’s.

Experiments were conducted using the extract from these two elements on brewer’s yeast which are “brimming with beta-amyloid clumps, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease.” The next experiment was done on fruit flies which were given the seaweed extract. The average lifespan of a fruit fly is only about forty to fifty days, but when given the seaweed extract that lifespan was prolonged another two days and when given the prickly pear extract another four days.
